64 of My Favorite Things

Just about every book has an “About the Author” section. There, you learn where they live, what writing awards they’ve gotten, who their family members are, and one thing they like to do. That strikes me as dull and impersonal. To really get to know someone, you need to learn some of their specific quirks. So, I’ve compiled 64 of my favorite things here. Maybe you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of my inner being—or you’ll just think I’m weird.

1.) Pet: Whether it’s warmhearted or playful, a loving cat is a great friend.

2.) Fruit: Apples, but grapes are a close second

3.) Sport: Is video game speedrunning a sport? No? Okay, swimming is something I actually enjoy.

4.) Novel: Friends to the End, and Here’s the End by Bobby Miller

5.) Novel that’s not Yours!: Okay, okay... There are a whole lot. Jacky Ha-Ha, Boy21, The Confessions of April Grace, and There’s A Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom are just a few.

6.) Season: Back when I was a kid, it was summer because that meant no school. Nowadays, I prefer the gentle weather autumn brings.

7.) Halloween Costume: A crazy scientist

8.) Single-Player Video Game: Super Mario 64

9.) Multiplayer Video Game: The whole Mario Kart series!

10.) Candy: I sometimes eat Pocky Sticks and Lifesavers if I can brave some unnecessary sugar and calories.

11.) Color: Red, then purple, then green

12.) Planet: Earth has a homey feeling the others don’t.

13.) Time of Day: 10:08 AM is when I really get going.

14.) Things to Doodle: Cubes, pyramids, flags, and awesome smiley faces

15.) Veggie: Broccoli. Don’t buy into the hate.

16.) Exercises: Push-ups for the arms and walking for the legs

17.) Part of being a Kid: Not feeling guilty when I do nothing productive

18.) Part of being an Adult: Not crying the moment things don’t go my way

19.) Holiday: Christmas, especially thanks to the peaceful, happy morning with my family

20.) Subject in School: It varied year by year based on which teacher was the most engaging. However, English eventually came out on top.

21.) Meat: Chicken. It tastes like chicken.

22.) Way to Read a Book: Holding a physical book on my lap while I’m curled up on my couch with noise-cancelling headphones over my ears and a pencil in my hand for jotting my thoughts in the margins

23.) Letter in the Bible: James directly challenges his listeners to let the Christian faith permeate everything they do.

24.) Book Genre: I’m never growing out of young adult or middle grade fiction.

25.) Things to Collect: Dropped pens, pencils, and coins... I feel like I’m on a rescue mission.

26.) Breakfast: Oatmeal with lots of berries in it

27.) Worship Songs: “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden” can move my heart.

28.) Rugrats Character: Chuckie Finster’s a funny, relatable fellow.

29.) Way to Pass Time in a Waiting Room: Looking at cute GIFs on my intelligent phone

30.) Instrument: The piano’s a beautiful, versatile instrument... not that I can play it or anything.

31.) Ice Cream Flavors: Strawberry and vanilla

32.) Movie: I don’t really have a favorite, but if I did, it would be either Inside Out or Toy Story 2.

33.) Thing to Wear: Funny t-shirts with cartoon or video game characters on them

34.) Type of Joke: Good ol’ puns, but I guess I’m not that good at making them. I once submitted ten puns to a contest online. I was hoping one would win, but no pun in ten did.

35.) Condiment: Ketchup makes the world a better place. Heck, back in the 1830s, some people thought it might have healing properties. I can see why!

36.) Superhero: Spiderman (but Captain Planet has the best theme song)

37.) Month: November, especially since that’s when I was released into the world

38.) Video Game Genre: Platforming. Nothing beats running fast and jumping high in crazy worlds!

39.) Disney Song: “A Whole New World” from Aladdin

40.) Thing at a Playground: Swings

41.) Pokémon: Pikachu, Eevee, Snivy, Bulbasaur, and Cubchoo, to name a few

42.) Way to Wear My Hair: Short so that I don’t have to do anything to it in the morning

43.) Day of the Week: Sunday

44.) Drink: Chocolate milk is life.

45.) Website: YouTube, mostly thanks to gaming videos

46.) Way to Feel Powerful: Taking in all the groceries at once makes a statement.

47.) Card Game: UNO

48.) SpongeBob SquarePants Character: Squidward Tortellini... or was it Tentacles?

49.) Band: Puffy AmiYumi

50.) Number: 255

51.) Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book: #7 (The Third Wheel) or #14 (Wrecking Ball)

52.) Pie: Pumpkin

53.) Mythological Character: Sisyphus has to roll a giant rock up a mountain forever. That’s what schoolwork always felt like to me, so I could relate to him.

54.) Store: Amazon has everything, including my books. Yeah, I'm biased.

55.) Font: Garamond allows for smooth reading.

56.) Bird: Ducks, especially since a couple visit my house in the spring

Bobby Miller's favorite Pokemon: Eevee, Bulbasaur, Snivy, Pikachu, and Cubchoo

I borrowed this artwork by Ken Sugimori from Bulbapedia.

57.) My Little Pony Character: I like just about all of them, but I’ll pick Fluttershy because she’s kind and loves animals. I also love animals... and I’m kind if I’m in the right mood.

58.) Toy to Play with as a Kid: My imagination... which, come to think of it, is something I still play with a whole lot.

59.) Songs: “Asia no Junshin” by Puffy AmiYumi, “Before the Light” by Nao Toyama, and “Iolite” by Duca are just some of my favorites. Did I mention I like Japanese pop music?

60.) Dog: I thought the shiba inu was cute long before the doge meme.

61.) Newspaper Comic Strip: Peanuts

62.) Thing to Say when I’m Mad at a Video Game: “What?!”

63.) Way to Celebrate New Year’s Eve: Sleep

64.) Bible Verse: “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34 (AMP Translation) I often have to whisper, “Let tomorrow worry about itself,” a gentle reminder of Jesus’ command.
